Our Harvest Gathering

Our school received a Farm To School Grant this year. We have a beautiful courtyard that wasn't getting used, so we added 12 raised beds, 5 mound beds, an herb garden, a strawberry patch and more. This is our second community harvest of the year. We invited our families in to harvest veggies, listen to presentations on safe routes to school, Project Jaguar (our at home reading program), our Public Health Department's nutritionist teaching easy veggie recipes, as well as eating together! We had over 140 people join us to celebrate Farm To School Month. Take a look at our Harvest...

Surviving The Titanic

Our wonderful fifth graders are learning about lifeboats in science through our FOSS science program. To make it a little more lively I handed my students passes with a colored dot on them so that they knew which lifeboat to go to. This was there group they would work with that week. I also showed them a video to reinforce vocabulary such as capacity. I also used a link I am sharing to provide extra information about the Titanic's lifeboats. We then created our control boat to check for capacity. Just making it real. We had a few minutes at the end to make another boat out of aluminum foil. I gave each lifeboat the same size piece of foil and asked them to design a boat that could hold the most passengers. We shall see who's design is more buoyant.

Here is the video I used. The kids were shocked to see that the lifeboats weren't filled to capacity.

Here is link to the facts I used.

And let's not forget the boarding passes.

Linking Up With Science Blogs

Today, I got my own science blog. I can't wait to share my ideas with you!Guess who I linked up with?

Feeling A Bit Veggie

Kindergartners are learning about their five senses and it still is warm enough to go out in the garden. I placed 6 different vegetables in 6 different socks. Can our little kiddos figure out by using their sense of touch which veggie is in the sock? This sheet can be used for our bigger kids in the garden. Our kindergartners can't write just yet.

Garden Measurement

We are busy with our third grade scientists. They are learning how to use the metric system in order for them to learn how to be geologists. Next week, they will be getting rocks to measure. Why not go outside and use the garden get a head start!

Using Technology In The Garden

We have just been awarded a $3500 grant to keep our garden growing. How exciting to be able to order an 8 x 12 greenhouse for our garden. We are writing another grant to try to secure Ipads for our students in our garden club to create videos using our new You Tube channel, TJschoolgardenclub.  We are using QR codes and teaching our students how to use Aurasma to link pictures to our You Tube channel. We will be displaying these codes in our school library around gardening and veggie books. We will be adding videos that the students create that tie in our garden harvest or harvest of the month facts. October is Farm to School Month. This Wednesday, we will be making a video to share some of the great things we are doing to celebrate our garden adventure.  See if you can connect to our first trial run.
